In East Ridge, Tennessee, a chase took a dramatic turn last July. Officer Alan Resendiz, nicknamed "Smiley" by his colleagues, was deploying harrows to stop a suspect when the latter veered violently and crashed into him. The result: seven broken ribs, a fractured pelvis and other injuries. After several months' recuperation, he has been on light duty since January, and is due to return to full duty on March 20, subject to his doctor's approval.
