On December 25, 2024, Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243 tragically crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan. The plane, an Embraer 190, lost control after colliding with birds, according to the pilot. But some analysts suspect it may have been shot down. The aircraft broke into several pieces, killing 38 of the 72 passengers. Shocked survivors, some slightly injured, emerged from the severed tail. Harrowing images, recovered from personal devices, show masks falling off, prayers and farewell messages in a ravaged cabin.
