Garbage truck explosion in Arlington Heights: Police bodycam video

On Monday, a new video was released showing the explosion of a garbage truck in the northwest suburb of Arlington Heights. The explosion injured two police officers and a firefighter on Friday afternoon, who have since recovered. Officers and firefighters were called to a garbage truck fire on Derbyshire Avenue, just north of Euclid Avenue around 4pm on Friday. As they arrived on the scene, part of the truck exploded. The truck, operated by Groot Waste Management, was fueled by compressed natural gas. One of the compressed natural gas tanks is believed to have exploded. A video captured by the dashcam of a police car shows debris falling into the street following the explosion. Parts of the truck landed several blocks away, and the shockwave from the explosion caused extensive property damage in the area. Some houses lost part of their roofs and siding, and several windows were shattered. A fire truck also had its windscreen shattered, and the airbags of a police car were activated by the blast. The cause of the explosion and fire is still under investigation, but one working hypothesis suggests that heat from an uncontrolled fire in the truck's dumpster mixed with natural gas in the tank.
