A man quietly snatched four bottles of wine from a Sainsbury's supermarket in Finsbury Park, despite the presence of store staff. The suspected thief acted with disconcerting calm, ignoring the efforts of an employee who tried to uncover his face to record it on CCTV. He simply carried on and left the store, before the stunned eyes of those present. This event is part of a wave of shoplifting incidents across the country, exacerbated by the financial crisis. Official statistics show a 29% increase in offences of this type in one year, from 365,173 to 469,788 cases between June 2023 and June 2024, equivalent to an average of two thefts per minute. A Sainsbury's spokesman confirmed that the incident has been reported to the police, who have CCTV footage to investigate.
