The resignation of Sheikh Hasina, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has plunged the country into a deep political crisis. Taking advantage of the chaos, extremist Islamist groups have stepped up attacks against the Hindu community, a vulnerable minority. Hindu villages are being targeted, their homes burnt down and their inhabitants persecuted, in an attempt to force their exodus. The predominantly Muslim army, although it has taken control to stabilize the country, is struggling to contain the violence.
