Social unrest in Bangladesh has reached a critical point, with students at the forefront. In reaction to the crushing of a student by a police car during a demonstration, students set fire to the headquarters of the state television station. Clashes between government support forces, police and protesting students have already left 32 people dead and thousands injured. These protests are a response to the oppression that many citizens perceive to be exercised by an authoritarian regime, and its inability to manage a persistent economic crisis. As the final straw, the President of the Republic issued a decree granting 30% of public-sector jobs to relatives of fighters in the 1971 war of independence.
