Crime is rife, and the homeless population has reached a record high of 5,490, double what it was ten years ago. Progressive Mayor Sheng Thao and District Attorney Pamela Price, known for their lack of toughness on petty crime, are up for impeachment in the next election. Many residents describe the situation as a "war zone", due to the increasing violence and insecurity.
