Thomas Perez Jr. was subjected to intense psychological pressure by police in Fontana, California, in an attempt to get him to confess to a murder he did not commit. The 17-hour interrogation included threats against his dog and false claims that his father had died. The police frequently tried to manipulate Perez, suggesting that he had killed his father in a fit of dementia. Upset by these allegations, Perez finally "confessed" to the imaginary crime. Faced with these false accusations, he attempted suicide. Subsequently, his father was found alive, having simply left the house following an argument. As a result of this police error, Perez received around $900,000 in compensation.
