Flash robberies are on the rise in California. Recently, a Chanel boutique in the Bay Area was brutally looted by three masked men, causing panic among customers. These incidents are so frequent that the LAPD has formed a special unit called the Organized Retail Crime Taskforce (ORCT). To date, this unit has made eleven arrests. California could lose $19 billion this year due to these thefts. The thieves target luxury brands such as Versace, Nike and Nordstrom. Videos show thieves carrying off merchandise, sometimes using irritant gases to facilitate their misdeeds. The financial consequences are heavy for retailers, also impacting consumers through higher insurance costs and increased merchandise prices
