In August 2021, a Detroit police officer, Kairy Roberts, was filmed punching a man in the face in Greektown, although the man did not appear to pose a threat. The blow briefly rendered the man unconscious. The video quickly made headlines and led to Roberts' suspension and an internal investigation. In July of the following year, the investigation concluded that Roberts had struck the man, 34-year-old Marcus Alston, without justification. It was also found that Roberts had not provided assistance to Alston after briefly knocking him unconscious and had not been honest with investigators. Faced with several internal accusations, Roberts chose to resign in September, before his superiors took action against him, and accepted a new position in another police unit shortly thereafter.
