A 17-year-old teenager, Jamon Cheatham, was caught on multiple cameras deliberately running over Deputy Sheriff Sarah Merriman during her arrest last August. The officer suffered serious injuries that left her with permanent damage and prevented her from working for two months. Although Cheatham's mother and attorneys tried to minimize his actions by arguing that he did not intend to kill the officer and was only a teenager, Sheriff Leon Lott pointed out that Cheatham made very adult decisions that could have cost someone their life. The judge denied the request to reduce bail because of Cheatham's criminal history, which includes charges of attempted murder, carjacking and weapons possession. In May, he will be transferred from juvenile justice to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center after turning 18.
