In May 2018, a 35-year-old man named Akira S. Lewis was shot and killed by a rookie police officer, Brindley Blood, during a traffic stop in Lawrence, Kansas. Blood claims that she meant to pull out her taser instead of her gun. Footage of the incident was released by the Lawrence Police Department. It shows Lewis becoming increasingly unruly with Officer Ian McCann, refusing to give his name or driving licence, and repeatedly asking McCann to bring a supervisor to the scene. Lewis then jumped out of the vehicle and attacked McCann, at which point Blood ran towards him and shot him, shouting "Taser Taser Taser". Lewis was then charged with assault and battery on a law enforcement officer, interfering with law enforcement, driving without proof of insurance and failure to wear a seatbelt. He was sentenced to one year of probation. Officer Blood was also charged with assault and battery, but resigned from the service and the charges were dropped.
